Cleaning the bathroom is never a pleasant chore, but caustic chemicals and heavily scented products make it even more unpleasant and especially challenging for those with respiratory ailments or skin conditions. Homemade cleaning solutions and non-toxic bathroom cleaner recipes make it easy and affordable to clean bathroom surfaces without harsh chemicals or noxious fumes. These five simple remedies replace commercial toilet bowl cleaner, glass cleaner, tub and tile cleaner and mildew remover.
These non-toxic bathroom cleaning techniques use the standard tools: toilet brush and rags or sponges, as well as a spray bottle, a toothbrush and a disposable mesh produce bag. The ingredients required are borax, baking soda and white vinegar.

Non-Toxic Best Composting Toilet

Flush the toilet to wet the sides. Sprinkle the toilet bowl with borax. Leave overnight and scrub with a toilet brush.

Homemade Cleaning Solution: All Natural Glass Cleaner

Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Label the bottle with indelible ink. Spray on glass and wipe clean with newspaper or a lint free cloth.

Chlorine-Free Tub and Tile Scouring Powder

Use borax instead of caustic powder cleansers. Simply sprinkle borax directly on the tub and tile or on a damp sponge and scrub surfaces. Rinse.

Baking soda also works as a scratch-free scouring powder for tubs and tile. If desired, use it in place of borax.

Non-Toxic Grout Cleaner

Conquering grout covered with mildew or layers of grime usually requires a noxious bathroom cleaner. Try this non-toxic cleaning solution instead. Combine a small amount of baking soda and water to make a paste. Apply the paste to a toothbrush and scrub the stains away. Apply additional paste as needed and rinse.

Use an electric toothbrush for extremely dirty grout, but be careful not to damage the grout.

Homemade Cleaning Solution: Soap Scum Remover

Tackle stubborn soap scum on tubs and tile with a homemade, no scratch scouring pad. Remove the label and metal tie from a plastic mesh produce bag and discard. Wrap the remaining sheet of mesh around a damp sponge or rag. The irregular texture washes away soap scum without scratching the finish. Add chlorine-free scouring powder to the sponge or rag and scrub the area. Rinse.
